Networking, or computer networking, is the process of connecting two or more computing devices, such as desktop computers, mobile devices, routers, or switches, to enable the transmission and exchange of information and resources.
Example: Connecting computers in an office to share files and access the
internet is an example of computer networking.
What is network
A computer network is a system of interconnected computers and other
devices that communicate with each other to share data, resources, and
services. These devices, which can include computers, servers, printers,
routers, and switches, are linked together through communication channels
(wired or wireless) to allow the transfer of information and enable
collaboration between users.
Key components of a computer network:
1. Devices: These are the
computers, servers, smartphones, printers, or other hardware connected to the network.
2. Network medium: The physical
or wireless pathways through which data is transmitted, such as cables
(Ethernet), fiber optics, or Wi-Fi.
3. Network devices: These are the
tools used to connect the network, like routers, switches, and hubs.
4. Protocols: Rules that
govern how data is sent and received on the network. For example, TCP/IP
is a common protocol suite used for communication over the Internet.
Types of computer networks:
1. LAN (Local AreaNetwork): A small network that connects devices within a limited area, like an
office, home or building.
2. WAN (Wide Area
Network): A larger network that connects devices over a broader geographic area,
such as different cities or countries.
3. MAN
(Metropolitan Area Network): A network that spans a city or a large campus.
4. PAN (Personal
Area Network): A small network typically used for personal devices like phones, laptops,
and tablets, often within a small area like a room.
5. CAN (Campus
Area Network): A network that covers a larger area than a LAN but is smaller than a MAN,
typically used for connecting networks across a campus or business complex.
6. HAN (Home Area
Network): A network that
is used within a home to connect personal devices and appliances.
7. SAN (Storage Area Network): A Storage Area Network (SAN)
is a high-speed network of storage devices that provides access to
consolidated, block-level data storage.
